Alex Hassan, Solo Pianist
A Northern Virginian, Alex Hassan, performs the syncopated melodies of the Golden Age of popular American music of the not- too- distant yesteryear. Considered a leading performing authority on Novelty Piano, he uses his classical training and intense love of this musical style to bring the musical period of ragtime and early jazz back to life.
The Haddonfield United Methodist Church is located near the center of town, just south of Kings Highway on Warwick Road. Tri-State Jazz Society concerts are held in Fellowship Hall, a large performance space with good acoustics and an excellent piano. There is a free parking lot and the church is two blocks from the PATCO station.
Haddonfield United Methodist Church
As a performer, recording artist and collector of historic artifacts of early American jazz, ragtime and popular compositions featuring syncopated rhythms, Alex brings back the excitement of the music of the near past. As a leading authority on Novelty Piano, his collection of over 1600 piano solo 78 RPM recordings and 30,000 sheets of published melodies help to preserve and promote this wonderful syncopated music.
Alex's performances at the Aldeburgh Festival (UK), Scott Joplin Festival (Sedalia, MO), Rocky Mountain Ragtime Festival (Boulder, CO), Piazza-On-The-Park (London), Stanford University, Smithsonian Institute, Player's Club (Manhattan), Toronto's McMichael Art Gallery, Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater and many other similar venues keep this musical style alive and growing. His performances before ragtime societies in major American cities and his 2007 all-novelty "Piano Rarities" concert in Husum, Germany
insure this happening.
Alex has recorded many CD albums. Four CD's were recently recorded in England by Shellwood Productions. They were hailed by the reviewer, in the British "Gramophone"
magazine, as among his favorite CD's of the year. Numerous other CD's are available and access to a youtube sampling of his work is available by visiting his website: http://noveltypiano.com/.
